Oh.. the Life On the Mississippi River

It seems the the Showboaters may have some company come this July as two very ambitious college students attempt to ride the river on a raft made by their own hands. Both seem to have had dreams of paddling on down the beast from Minnesota to New Orleans. They have been working diligently on their raft and are just about ready for take off. When all is said and done their Huckleberry Finn ride (called the Velvet Glove) will " be furnished with living quarters, camp stove and a steering mechanism attached by cables to an outboard motor and a trolling motor for added push. The couple also plan to take along a few chickens and ducks as egg suppliers".

Now I can understand the living quarters, though it is hard to slam a curtain when one is truly mad, but the chickens and ducks? Wouldn't it have been a lot easier to join the cast of the Mississippi Showboat and spend a lazy summer on the banks of the Mississippi. We would have even let them steer the boat for the full effect. Though we do have some divas, we have never been accused of having any ducks. Oh, okay, I must admit in past years some singers had sounded like they were squawking their way through "Roll On"... but not his year. This year we have the best of the best. The cream of the crop. And maybe, if you pick just the right night, you can wave at the poor souls on their homemade raft, as the chorus sings "My Huckleberry Finn and You".
